Port Forward Your PS5 for Better Online Gaming

If your PS5 keeps showing a strict NAT or you are struggling with disconnects and lag, setting up port forwarding can make a big difference. In this guide you will learn how to assign a permanent IP address to your PS5 and forward the correct TCP and UDP ports so your console can communicate more directly with game servers and other players. The example uses a TP-Link gaming router, but the same settings apply to almost any router brand.

How to Port Forward Your PS5 for NAT Type 2

Step by Step Guide to PS5 Port Forwarding

Why Port Forwarding Helps Your PS5

By default your router uses NAT to share a single public IP address between many devices. This can cause your PS5 to sit behind a more restrictive NAT type, which may lead to issues such as:

Port forwarding opens specific ports on your router and points them to your PS5. This creates a more direct communication path to game servers and other players and can help you achieve NAT Type 2, which is ideal for most PlayStation users.

Step 1: Assign a Permanent IP Address to Your PS5

Before you create any port forwarding rules you need to make sure your PS5 always uses the same local IP address. The easiest way to do this is with an address reservation in your router.

  1. Log in to your router admin page and open the DHCP Server section.
  2. Find the IP address pool range used by your router, for example 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199.
  3. Choose one address inside that range that will be reserved for your PS5, for example 192.168.1.88.
  4. Locate the Address Reservation or Static DHCP option and click Add or Create.
  5. Make sure your PS5 is turned on and connected to the network, then view the list of connected devices.
  6. Select your PS5 from the device list so that your router automatically fills in its MAC address.
  7. Enter the reserved IP address you chose, such as 192.168.1.88, and click Save.
  8. Reboot both your PS5 and your router so the reservation takes effect.

After both devices restart, verify on your PS5 network settings that the console is using the reserved IP address. Once you confirm this, you are ready to create the port forwarding rules.

Step 2: Open the Port Forwarding Section in Your Router

The port forwarding feature is sometimes called Virtual Server, NAT Forwarding, or similar. In the video the example router is a TP-Link gaming model, where port forwarding appears under NAT Forwarding.

Open the port forwarding or virtual server page and get ready to add several new rules that will all point to the IP address of your PS5.

Step 3: PS5 Port Forwarding Values

The guide uses five separate services, three using the TCP protocol and two using UDP. All of them forward traffic to the same PS5 IP address, for example 192.168.1.88.

Service Name Protocol External Port Internal Port Notes
PS5_TCP1 TCP 80 80 Basic HTTP traffic used by many services
PS5_TCP2 TCP 443 443 HTTPS traffic for secure connections
PS5_TCP3 TCP 3478-3480 3478-3480 PlayStation Network TCP ports
PS5_UDP1 UDP 3478-3479 3478-3479 PlayStation Network UDP ports
PS5_UDP2 UDP 49152-65535 49152-65535 High port range used for game traffic and voice

For each row in the table above you will create a separate port forwarding entry in your router:

Step 4: Reboot and Test Your PS5 Connection

When all of the port forwarding entries have been added:

  1. Reboot your router so the new rules are applied.
  2. Restart your PS5 once again.
  3. On your PS5 go to Settings then Network then Test Internet Connection.
  4. Wait for the test to complete and check the NAT type that is reported.

If everything is configured correctly you should see NAT Type 2 and your download and upload speeds should look healthy. This usually results in smoother matchmaking, fewer disconnects, and more stable online play.

Extra Tips and Troubleshooting

Once your ports are open and your PS5 reports NAT Type 2 you should notice more reliable connections, especially in multiplayer games and party chat. From here you can enjoy your games without constantly fighting networking issues.

In this video you will learn exactly how to port forward your PS5 so you can improve online connectivity and stability. Port forwarding helps create a more direct and open communication path between your console, the game servers, and other players. If you are trying to achieve NAT Type 2 on your PS5, port forwarding is one of the most reliable solutions.

The example in the walkthrough uses a TP-Link GE800 gaming router, but the same steps apply to most router brands. The process has two main parts: giving your PS5 a permanent IP address and then forwarding the correct ports to that address.

Assigning a Permanent IP Address to Your PS5

First you need to give your PS5 a permanent or reserved IP address on your local network. The easiest way to do this is by creating an address reservation on your router. An address reservation assigns a specific IP address to the MAC address of your PS5 so that it always receives the same IP from the DHCP server.

Open your router settings and go to the DHCP Server section. Look for the pool range of IP addresses used by the router. Your IP range may look similar to 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.199, but the exact numbers may be different on your network.

Choose one IP address from within this pool to assign to your PS5. You only need to pick the last number, also called the fourth octet. The first three numbers stay the same. For example you could choose 192.168.1.88 as long as 88 falls inside the pool range defined by your router.

Next, look for the Address Reservation option and click Add. Make sure your PS5 is turned on and connected to the network. In the MAC address or connected devices list, view the devices and find your PS5. Select the PS5 entry so that your router can link the MAC address to the reserved IP.

Type the reserved IP address you chose, such as 192.168.1.88, into the IP Address field, then save the entry. After saving, reboot both your PS5 and your router so that the new reservation is applied.

When everything comes back online, verify on your PS5 that it is using the reserved IP address you assigned. Once that IP address is confirmed you are ready to create the port forwarding rules.

Creating Port Forwarding Rules for PS5

Go back into your router settings and look for a feature called Port Forwarding. On the TP-Link GE800 this is located under NAT Forwarding, but other brands may use names such as Virtual Server or Port Mapping. In the video guide, five port forwarding services are added: three use the TCP protocol and two use UDP.

These services are designed to give your PS5 the fastest possible connection to the servers and to other players. Each service points to the same PS5 IP address, for example 192.168.1.88.

The first service is named PS5_TCP1. Use the IP address of your PS5, then set the external port to 80 and the internal port to 80. Choose the TCP protocol and save the rule.

The second service is named PS5_TCP2. Again use your PS5 IP address. Set the external port to 443 and the internal port to 443. Select TCP as the protocol and save the entry.

The third service is named PS5_TCP3. Use the same PS5 IP address and this time enter a port range of 3478 through 3480. Apply that range to both the external and internal ports and keep the protocol on TCP, then save the rule.

The fourth service is named PS5_UDP1. Once again use the same PS5 IP address. Set the port range from 3478 through 3479 for both the external and internal ports and choose UDP as the protocol. Save the rule.

The fifth and final service is named PS5_UDP2. Use the PS5 IP address and enter a port range of 49152 through 65535. Apply this range to both the external and internal ports and set the protocol to UDP. Save the entry to complete the port forwarding configuration.

Rebooting and Testing the Connection

When all five services have been added, reboot your PS5 and your router one more time. This ensures that the new rules are active and applied correctly.

After the reboot, go to your PS5 network settings and run a connection test. The video shows that with these settings the console reports NAT Type 2 along with very fast download and upload speeds. This is a strong indication that the ports are open and that your PS5 now has a clearer path to the online servers.

With your ports forwarded and NAT Type 2 in place you should enjoy more stable matchmaking, fewer connection drops, and smoother online gaming in general.
