DuckStation Installation & Optimization Guide

Requirements: DuckStation software, PlayStation BIOS (scph1001.bin), and PS1 .bin ROM files.
Installation: Download the emulator from GitHub, extract it into a folder, and organize separate folders for BIOS and games.
First Launch: Open duckstation-qt, set BIOS path, and configure your controller (Xbox, Nvidia Shield, etc.).

Performance Notes:

Crash Bandicoot 2 looks better at default resolution than 4K.
Gran Turismo 2 looks impressive in 2K, but 4K may cause issues.
Tekken 3 plays smoothly in 1080p and 1440p, and even holds up in 4K.

To switch resolutions mid-game, simply pause, go to enhancement settings, change resolution or display ratio, and resume gameplay instantly—one of DuckStation’s best features.

For best experience, launch the game using the duckstation-sdl version. All settings from the QT version carry over.

In this episode, we’ll guide you through installing and configuring DuckStation, the best PS1 emulator thanks to its powerful video enhancement options and 4K support.

We previously used BizHawk and Zebra, but DuckStation stands out for its ability to upscale graphics. We'll walk through installation, BIOS setup, controller configuration, and prime video settings.

Step-by-step installation:

Create a folder on your desktop (e.g., "PlayStation One").
Download DuckStation from GitHub and extract it into this folder.
Create a bios folder and add the scph1001.bin BIOS file.
Create a games folder with your .bin format PS1 ROMs.

Launch the emulator using duckstation-qt. Upon first launch, update the software if prompted. Then, go to the BIOS tab and set the BIOS path to your folder.

Controller Mapping:

Supports various controllers (e.g., Xbox, Nvidia Shield).
Map D-pad directions, Select, Start, face buttons, L1/L2, R1/R2, and analog axes.

Before loading a game, visit Enhancement Settings. Set a minimum internal resolution of 720p at 4x. This is a great baseline for all PS1 games. Some games may benefit from higher resolutions, while others may not look good beyond stock settings.

Example tests:

Crash Bandicoot 2: Best at default resolution; looks distorted in 4K.
Gran Turismo 2: Looks good at 1080p, slightly better at 1440p, and great in 2K. 4K didn’t work.
Tekken 3: Improves steadily from 720p to 4K. Best in 1440p or 1080p.

DuckStation lets you change enhancement settings mid-game—adjust resolution or screen ratio, then jump right back into the game. One of its standout features!

Internal Resolution: 1440p
Multi-Sample: 8x
Texture Filtering: XBR
Display: Original 4:3 or stretch to 16:9
Enable full-screen startup (optional)

After saving your settings, launch the game via duckstation-sdl. All settings carry over from QT. For optimal experience, always use the SDL version.

As for getting ROMs, that’s up to you—whether you rip from your own CDs or find them online. Always stay legal and safe.
