ASUS Router Port Forwarding Guide for Gamers

Improve your gaming and streaming performance by following our detailed guide on configuring port forwarding on your ASUS router. This tutorial explains how to set up a static IP address, adjust your DHCP range, and create port forwarding profiles to achieve optimal NAT type 2 for your PS5 and other devices.

Easy ASUS Router Port Forwarding for PS5 & Gaming

Step-by-Step Port Forwarding Tutorial

Port forwarding is a powerful technique to reduce lag and improve your online gaming experience. In this guide, we explain how to configure your ASUS router so that your PlayStation 5—and even other devices like Xbox or a gaming PC—benefit from improved connectivity and NAT type 2 performance.

Understanding Port Forwarding

Port forwarding directs incoming internet traffic to a specific device on your local network by opening designated ports on your router. This process enhances connectivity by ensuring that your gaming console receives direct data from online servers, ultimately reducing latency and lag during gameplay.

Preparing Your Network

Before you begin port forwarding, it is essential to:

Configuring Your ASUS Router

Follow these steps to set up port forwarding:

  1. Log into Your Router:

Access the ASUS router’s admin interface via your web browser. Navigate to the WAN settings where port forwarding options are available.

  2. Create a Port Forwarding Profile:

Click on "Add Profile" and assign a service name (e.g., PS51). Enter the external ports (such as 3478 and 3479) that are required by your console and map them to your device’s static IP address.

  3. Add Additional Profiles if Needed:

If your setup requires multiple port ranges, create additional profiles (e.g., PS52) using the same static IP.

  4. Apply and Reboot:

After saving your settings, reboot both your router and console to ensure that the new configurations take effect.

Troubleshooting and Additional Tips

If you encounter issues with your port forwarding setup, consider these troubleshooting tips:

Conclusion

By following this comprehensive guide, you can optimize your network for gaming and streaming. Port forwarding on your ASUS router not only enhances your online gaming experience by reducing lag but also ensures a smoother, more stable connection across devices. Whether you are using a PS5, Xbox, or a PC, these steps will help you achieve better NAT performance and an overall improved internet experience. do you want to improve your video streaming and gaming experience while reducing lag and latency on your gaming console and or PC of course you do hey hey what's up Mike this is guys welcome back to the channel today I'm going to show you how to port forward on an ASUS router in the example we're going to use today is we're going to port forward a PlayStation 5. now this works also with Xbox and many other gaming consoles as well as a PC so what exactly is port forwarding port forwarding opens a specific port on your router which is then forwarded to the IP address of the device that you want to receive the traffic from and by port forwarding this will give you net type 2 on your PlayStation and NAT type open on your Xbox and these NAT Types are fantastic for gaming and streaming achieving NAT type 1 on your PlayStation 5 can be done by plugging your PS5 directly into the modem however that's a huge security risk because there is no firewall to protect your PS5 from hackers or bad guys and to be honest NAT type 2 is all you need for an outstanding game experience so there are a few things you're going to need when you're port forwarding the first thing you're going to need is the IP address of the device and for us it's the PlayStation 5. the IP address of your device needs to be a static IP address which means it's a permanent and fixed IP address to set a static IP address you will need to choose an IP address outside of the DHCP server range and routers always start the DHCP pool range with the IP pool starting address with the last octet at 2. in the ending IP pool address with the last octet at 254. we have 253 available IP addresses most homes only need a fraction of these IP addresses so we can free up some IP addresses for static IPS by changing the DHCP pool range and this is how you do it we'll change our DHCP pool range from 192.168.1.8 through 192.168.1.247 this freezes is at 14 IP addresses for static IPS 7 on the front end and seven on the back end so change the pool of IP addresses and hit apply so the reason we use static IP addresses outside the DHCP server range is to avoid IP address conflicts these IP address conflicts occur when two devices share the same IP address so if we chose an IP address inside the DHCP server range there's a good chance when DHCP hands out the IP addresses that will have two devices with the same IP address and this is a networking disaster you must avoid our IP address is 192.168.1.2 and we set up a static IP address and if you're not familiar with setting up a static IP address let me show you how so once you log into the PS5 go to settings then network settings next thing you want to do is add a new internet connection then go to the advanced settings and here we'll make all the changes first thing you want to do is turn off automatic and set it to manual and here you'll put in your static IP address for us is one 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway should be 192.168.1.1 this is the same as the IP address of your router admin page under DNS you can leave it blank or use the DNS server listed in your router settings we use our pie hole DNS for primary and cloudflare per secondary in the other two settings leave them alone okay now that we set the DHCP range and now you have a static IP address save all the changes now it's time to port forward our PS5 now go back into your ASUS router and go into the WAN settings and then look for port forwarding we're going to add some numbers and you can simply copy these down and I'll explain everything in detail so go to add profile then service name you can type in whatever you want we'll do ps51 protocol both external ports three four seven eight comma three four seven nine and this is the IPA address of your device which is our PlayStation 5. hit OK and we'll add a profile again and we'll do ps52 same IP address hit OK and just keep following what I'm doing here one thing you won't have to worry about is internal port or Source IP so this port forwarding setup is pretty easy once you add all your ports you're going to reboot your router and you also want to reboot your PS5 at the same time and this is the same for Xbox and Nintendo switch however the numbers are different for the port forwarding just do a simple internet search for Xbox 40 numbers or Nintendo switch Port 40 numbers and just a heads up if you have net type 3 on your PS5 this will change it to net type 2 for sure you can also turn on universal plug and play and just a heads up I've enabled universal plug and play on my router and it did not change my NAT type I'm still NAT type 2. however if you have net type 3 you need to port forward so that's how you port forward an ASUS router so guys remember like share subscribe comment and for God's sakes hit the Bell icon and I'll see you next video real soon peace
