A well-designed home network gives you stronger Wi-Fi coverage, faster wired connections, fewer dead zones, and better protection for computers, mobile devices, and smart home equipment. This guide explains how to plan your network, choose an internet provider and router, install Ethernet connections, optimize Wi-Fi, and improve network security.
Slow wireless performance is not always caused by the internet connection itself. The real problem may be poor router placement, limited Wi-Fi coverage, outdated hardware, wireless interference, or too many devices sharing the same connection.
Building a dependable home network begins with planning. Before purchasing equipment, consider the size and layout of your home, the number of users, the available internet providers, the number of wired devices, and the areas that require strong Wi-Fi coverage.
The correct network design depends on how the home will use the connection. A small apartment may need only a modem and standalone router. A large or multi-level home may require Ethernet wiring, a switch, access points, or a mesh Wi-Fi system.
Answer these questions before selecting your equipment:
Your internet connection may be delivered through fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, or a satellite service such as Starlink. Availability and performance vary by location.
Choose a plan that supports your household's normal activities. Streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, online gaming, video calls, and remote work can place significant demands on the connection.

Most home networks use some combination of the following equipment:
Internet providers may offer a modem and router combination device. It can be convenient, but purchasing your own router usually provides more control over Wi-Fi settings, security, guest networks, VPN features, and future upgrades.
Choose a router that fits the home's size, internet speed, number of devices, and desired features. Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 routers support different wireless capabilities, so verify that your phones, computers, and other devices can use the selected technology.
After the internet provider installs and tests the modem or fiber connection, connect the modem to the router's WAN or internet port using an Ethernet cable. Cat 6 or better is a practical choice for most modern home installations.
Turn on the router and follow the manufacturer's setup process. Many routers can be configured with a smartphone application.
Modern routers may provide separate 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz networks. Some routers combine compatible bands under one network name using a feature commonly called Smart Connect or band steering.
Your router may also support dedicated guest and IoT networks. Use unique network names and passwords instead of leaving the factory defaults in place.
Most consumer routers include a limited number of LAN ports. If you need additional wired connections, connect an Ethernet switch to one of the router's LAN ports.
Many unmanaged switches are plug-and-play. Connect the router to the switch, and then connect computers, televisions, game consoles, access points, and other devices to the remaining switch ports.
A useful planning guideline is one or two Ethernet ports in rooms where wired devices are likely to be used. This may include bedrooms, offices, living rooms, game rooms, kitchens, and garages.
Newer homes may already have Ethernet cabling that terminates in a central network panel. Older homes may require new low-voltage wiring or assistance from a professional installer.
A standalone router may provide enough coverage for a small home, condominium, or apartment. Larger and multi-level homes may require mesh nodes or wired wireless access points.
Mesh nodes can connect to the main router through wired or wireless backhaul:

Connect compatible devices to 5 GHz or 6 GHz for higher speeds. Use 2.4 GHz when a device is farther from the router or does not support the newer bands.
Many smart home devices support only 2.4 GHz, so a dedicated IoT network can make installation and management easier. Wi-Fi 7 routers may also provide Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, for compatible devices.
Use a guest network for visitors. This gives friends and family internet access without sharing the password for the main network or allowing direct access to personal computers and storage devices.
No network is completely immune to attack, but a few important settings can significantly reduce risk.
After installation, test wired and wireless performance in the areas where the network will be used. Confirm that devices connect to the intended network and that coverage is strong in offices, bedrooms, living areas, and outdoor spaces.
Check periodically for firmware updates, unknown connected devices, poor coverage areas, and equipment that may need to be repositioned or upgraded. A carefully planned network should provide dependable performance for streaming, gaming, remote work, smart home equipment, file storage, and everyday internet access.

2:29 The router is the brain of the home network. A midrange wireless router may provide sufficient coverage for a small home, condominium, or apartment, although actual coverage depends on the layout, construction materials, interference, and router placement.
2:40 The equipment on my desk includes a VPN router without built-in Wi-Fi connected to a network switch.
2:43 The switch connects to a PoE injector, and the PoE injector connects to a wireless access point.
2:49 The access point provides Wi-Fi coverage and receives power through Power over Ethernet. This requires either a PoE injector or a PoE switch.
3:00 The final device on the desk is a NAS, or network-attached storage device. A NAS can store files or host a Plex media server.
3:07 These are only a few examples of the equipment you can use in a home network.
3:12 After purchasing the internet plan, the provider will normally install and test the cable modem or fiber connection.
3:21 Your responsibility is to connect the modem or fiber equipment to the router. Use an Ethernet cable between the modem and the WAN or internet port on the router. I recommend Cat 6 or a higher category when appropriate.
3:33 Make sure the router is turned on. You can then access it using the setup information printed on the router.
3:38 Every router brand is different, but many modern routers can be configured using a smartphone.
3:50 The initial setup usually takes approximately five to ten minutes.
3:55 Create an administrator password that is at least 16 characters long and contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Longer passwords are generally more difficult to guess.
4:07 The fifth step is configuring the wireless networks, including the SSIDs and passwords.
4:11 The available options depend on whether the router uses Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7.
4:19 Some routers separate the wireless bands into different network names. Other routers combine the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands under one SSID using a feature commonly called Smart Connect.

4:36 During setup, the application will ask you to confirm the SSIDs and passwords. Change the default network names and passwords because continuing to use the factory credentials creates an unnecessary security risk.

5:13 Most unmanaged switches are plug-and-play and easy to install. Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the router to a port on the switch. The remaining switch ports can then be used for wired devices.
5:27 Most gigabit switches are relatively inexpensive. The switch shown in the video is a 10-gigabit switch, which costs more.
5:36 My rule of thumb is to install one or two Ethernet ports per room. This may include bedrooms, living rooms, game rooms, kitchens, and garages.
5:51 Many newly built homes include Ethernet connections in multiple rooms. These cables normally return to a central network panel.
5:55 The central panel may also contain the fiber or modem connection, router, switches, and other network equipment.
6:07 Older homes often do not have Ethernet ports installed in every room. You may need to install the wiring yourself or hire a low-voltage installer.

6:51 Larger and multi-level homes can be more complicated. If the router is on the first floor and you need strong Wi-Fi on the second floor, mesh nodes or access points may be required.

7:33 For the fastest Wi-Fi, connect compatible devices to the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band.
7:38 Older devices may not support 6 GHz. That band is intended for compatible Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices. Other devices can use 5 GHz, which is still fast.
7:50 In larger homes, some devices may need to use 2.4 GHz because it usually provides a longer range. However, it is generally slower than 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
8:00 If Smart Connect is enabled, the router may place compatible devices on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz based on signal strength and bandwidth requirements.
8:08 Many IoT devices support only 2.4 GHz. If your router provides a separate IoT network, use it for compatible smart home devices.
