If your PlayStation 5 is stuck in safe mode due to a file corruption issue, you’re not alone. A common bug related to PS5 rest mode can cause system crashes and lockups. In this guide, we’ll show you how to safely recover from the issue with a forced reboot and how to set up USB extended storage after Sony’s latest April update.
If your console is displaying file corruption errors and you're stuck in safe mode:
If successful, immediately go to Settings ? System ? Power Saving and disable all rest mode features. This helps prevent the bug from recurring.
The April system update allows you to store—but not play—PS5 games on external USB storage. Here’s how to do it:
The April update also brings enhancements to system control, social features, and the PlayStation app—making your PS5 experience even better.
What’s up guys, welcome back to Ultimate Tech Hub. If your PS5 is stuck in safe mode with a file corruption issue, it’s likely caused by the rest mode bug—a known problem since launch.
In this video, I’ll show you how to fix it, get out of safe mode, and disable rest mode to prevent this from happening again. I’ll also show you how to set up USB storage on your PS5 to save space and transfer games.
After going into rest mode overnight, our PS5 had a file corruption error and booted into safe mode. The options to update via internet or USB, or to factory reset, all failed. Each resulted in another corruption error.
We contacted PlayStation support, and their only solution was to send the console in for service. But while waiting for the FedEx box, we tried fixing it ourselves with a forced reboot.
Forced Reboot Method:
This time, the system allowed us to update via internet. It downloaded and installed successfully, then repaired the disk and database. We were back in!
Next Step: Disable rest mode. Go to Settings → System → Power Saving → Set “Rest Mode” to Off for all situations. Also, set your controller to turn off after 30 minutes of inactivity to preserve battery life.
Now with the April update: You can store PS5 games on external storage. You can't play them directly, but you can transfer them back and forth. Just plug a USB 3.0 drive into the back port of the PS5 and power it on. The console will detect it automatically.
Use the storage to offload large PS4 games too. I kept Gran Turismo on my SSD since it's over 100 GB and runs better internally.
Drive Requirements:
You can use multiple drives, but only one will work at a time. The April update also improves system customization, adds social features, and expands the PlayStation app.
I hope this helped you fix your PS5. Always try the forced reboot before sending your console in. And remember to turn off rest mode until Sony releases a patch.
