PS5 Console Edition Unboxing, Setup, Settings, and First Gameplay

This guide walks through the PlayStation 5 Console Edition unboxing, setup, first-time configuration, recommended settings, and early gameplay impressions. It covers what comes in the box, how to connect the PS5, how to place it horizontally, which settings to adjust before gaming, and what to expect from games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Astro's Playroom, and Mortal Kombat 11.

Unboxing the PlayStation 5 Console Edition

The PlayStation 5 Console Edition was one of the hardest gaming systems to buy after launch. In this video, the PS5 Console Edition was purchased from GameStop and unboxed for the first time. After seeing reports of missing consoles and fake delivery contents, opening the box came with a little bit of suspense. Fortunately, everything was inside exactly as expected.

The packaging has a clean black and white design, matching the style of the console itself. The box highlights several major features, including 8K, 4K, and HDR support. Once opened, the console and accessories are packed securely to help prevent damage during shipping.

What Comes With the PS5 Console Edition?

The PS5 Console Edition includes everything needed to get started. Along with the console, you get the DualSense wireless controller, power cord, HDMI cable, USB charging cable, stand, and printed documentation.

Included Item Purpose
PlayStation 5 Console Edition The main PS5 console with built-in optical disc drive.
DualSense Controller The PS5 controller with haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support.
Power Cord Connects the PS5 to a power outlet. No external power brick is required.
HDMI Cable Connects the PS5 to your TV or display.
USB Charging Cable Used to connect and charge the DualSense controller.
Console Stand Supports the PS5 when positioned vertically or horizontally.
Quick Start Guide Provides basic setup instructions in multiple languages.
Safety Guide Includes important safety and usage information.

PS5 Console Design and Ports

The PS5 has a bold, futuristic design with a black and white color scheme. It is larger and heavier than many people expect, so it is not the type of console you will want to move around often. It can be placed vertically or horizontally, depending on your entertainment center, TV stand, or shelf layout.

On the front of the PS5 Console Edition, there is a USB Type-A port, a USB Type-C port, a power button, and an eject button for the disc drive. On the back, there are two more USB Type-A SuperSpeed ports, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and the power connection.

PS5 Port Layout

  • Front: USB Type-A, USB Type-C, power button, eject button.
  • Back: Two USB Type-A ports, LAN port, HDMI port, power connection.
  • Disc drive: Included on the PS5 Console Edition.

Setting Up the PS5 Horizontally

In this setup, the PS5 replaces a PS4 and is placed horizontally on a fireplace mantel. Since the PS5 is large, horizontal placement keeps it from blocking the TV screen. The included stand is used under the console to support it properly.

At first glance, the stand may not seem important, but it helps provide airflow underneath the PS5. From certain angles, it also makes the console look like it is floating. When placing the PS5 horizontally, the two brackets on the stand rest against the white panels of the console.

Connecting Power, HDMI, and Ethernet

The PS5 power cord looks similar to the PS4 power cord, and there is no bulky external power brick. In this setup, the console is connected to power, HDMI, and a Cat6 Ethernet cable for a wired network connection.

One important issue came up during setup: the existing HDMI cable did not work with the PS5. The solution was to use the HDMI cable that came in the PlayStation 5 box. If your PS5 does not display correctly during setup, try switching to the included HDMI cable before troubleshooting further.

The black center section of the PS5 looks great, but it does show fingerprints and smudges easily. A microfiber cloth can wipe those off without scratching the glossy finish.

First-Time PS5 Setup

Before starting the PS5 for the first time, connect the DualSense controller to the console using the included USB cable. When the console starts, it prompts you to connect the controller and press the PS button.

The first-time setup includes selecting your language, choosing whether to use the screen reader, adjusting video display settings, and installing a game. In this video, the first game selected was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, based on a channel poll.

When inserting a disc into the PS5 Console Edition, make sure the top of the disc faces up. The first system software update was also required during setup. In this case, the update took about 30 minutes because the uploaded file initially showed as corrupted before eventually working. Installing Call of Duty from the disc to the PS5 took about an hour, so patience is definitely required.

Best PS5 Settings to Change Before Playing

Before jumping into gameplay, a few settings are worth adjusting. These settings help save controller battery life, improve privacy, optimize video output, and favor smoother gameplay.

Setting Recommended Adjustment Why It Helps
Power Saving Set the controller to turn off after 30 minutes of no use. Saves DualSense controller battery life.
Microphone Set microphone to mute when starting a chat or broadcast. Helps avoid accidentally broadcasting audio.
Screen and Video Set deep color output to automatic. Allows finer color gradation when supported by your TV.
Game Presets Set the PS5 to performance mode. Prioritizes smoother gameplay when supported by the game.

First Gameplay: Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War

The first game played on the PS5 is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The gameplay immediately shows off the console's graphics and smooth performance. The level of detail is impressive, and the online experience runs well during the first session.

The DualSense controller is one of the biggest upgrades. After years of using DualShock controllers, the new haptic feedback feels like a major step forward. Even firing a weapon feels different, smoother, and more immersive.

Trying Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is another strong showcase for the PS5. The graphics are detailed, the sound design is cinematic, and the controller feedback adds to the overall experience. The game feels realistic and fast, making it a must-play for Spider-Man fans.

Astro's Playroom Shows Off the DualSense Controller

Astro's Playroom comes included with the PS5, and it is much more than a simple pack-in game. It is designed to show what the DualSense controller can do, including detailed haptic feedback, sound effects, and creative gameplay mechanics.

Even though Astro's Playroom may look like a game for kids, it is fun, creative, and surprisingly impressive. Each world feels different, and the game does a great job showing off the new controller features.

Mortal Kombat 11 on PS5

Mortal Kombat 11 also looks excellent on the PS5. The faster loading from the SSD is immediately noticeable. The visuals rival the PC version, and gameplay feels smooth. Once again, the haptic feedback adds another layer of immersion during fights.

If you enjoy fighting games, Mortal Kombat 11 is a strong PS5 title to try. The audio, video, and overall responsiveness all help make the game feel upgraded on the new console.

Final Thoughts on the PS5 Console Edition

The PS5 Console Edition makes a strong first impression. The console is large and heavy, but it looks modern and feels powerful. Setup is straightforward, although updates and game installs can take time. The included HDMI cable may be the safest option if your existing cable does not work correctly.

The biggest upgrade is the DualSense controller. The haptic feedback, improved feel, and overall balance make it difficult to imagine going back to the older DualShock controller. Between the fast SSD, smooth gameplay, improved controller, and excellent launch titles, the PS5 Console Edition delivers a strong next-generation gaming experience.

Hi guys, welcome back. On today's episode, we are going to unbox the PlayStation 5 Console Edition, set it up, and tweak some of the settings before we play any games.

We will be playing one of these two games that you picked in our channel poll, but you will find out which one later. Are you ready?

We purchased this PlayStation 5 Console Edition at GameStop. The PlayStation 5 launched on November 12, and since then, it has been a huge challenge to buy one of these consoles. If you are looking to buy one, you should watch our video on the best method to buy a PS5.

I like the packaging. It looks really nice. The black and white design looks pretty slick. Up top, you can see 8K, 4K, and HDR. Here is the back of the box. Let us go ahead and open it.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous when I opened this box. I had seen news stories about PS5 consoles being delivered, and when customers opened the box, there was no PS5 inside, only a couple of heavy bricks. Fortunately for us, no bricks.

Here is exactly what you get with your PS5 Console Edition, which retails for $499.

First, we have the quick start guide. It is printed in different languages. This is the safety guide, and it includes a lot of information. This looks like the power cord.

And this is the baby. The controller feels like a regular PS4 controller, maybe a little thicker in the grip area and a little more balanced. I am very excited to start playing with this.

Inside, we have another cord. This is the charging cord for the controller. This looks like the stand. We also have the HDMI cable.

And here we go. This is it, the main event. It is packaged well so it will not get damaged during shipment. What a relief, no brick. This is the PlayStation 5 Console Edition, which means it has an optical disc drive.

PlayStation kept the connections pretty simple. On the front, there are only two connections: USB Type-A and USB Type-C. There is also a power button and an eject button for the disc.

On the back, there are two more USB Type-A SuperSpeed connections, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and the power connection. That is it. Very simple and very nice.

I love the color and style. It is very futuristic. I will probably set this up flat on my fireplace mantel.

This is exactly what you get when you buy a PS5 Console Edition. With this console, you have two options. You can place it vertically or horizontally.

The first thing I am going to do is swap out the PS4. I will unhook everything, and then we are going to put the PS5 up here. We are going to lay it flat because otherwise it would be in the way of the screen.

This is an external hard drive that I have my games on. I am going to unplug it here. Unfortunately, we cannot use this for the PS5 right now. However, in a future video, we will show you how to set up an external hard drive on your PS5.

Before we hook up the PS5 to the TV, we have to move the mantel out of the way and connect some cords. Please forgive the mess behind the mantel. It is pretty bad. That is controlled chaos.

This is the PS5 power cord. It looks the same as the PS4 power cord, and there is no power brick, which is nice. One thing about this cord is that it is not super long, so keep that in mind when you are setting it up.

I am going to place the PS5 horizontally, so I need to put the stand on. The stand simply goes underneath the console. The two brackets on the stand rest on the white part of the PS5.

To be honest, I was not sure what the stand was really good for, but it does provide airflow underneath the PS5. From certain angles, it also makes the PS5 appear like it is floating.

Now we can plug in the power. Like I said, the cord is just long enough.

I am going to use my HDMI cable. I may swap it out eventually, but just a heads up: this HDMI cable did not work. I ended up using the one that came with the PlayStation, so keep that in mind.

Next, we connect our Cat6 Ethernet cable, and we should be good to go.

I love the way this looks. The white and black together look amazing. This console is thick, and the PS5 is pretty heavy. It is not really portable.

I like how the PS5 has all the connections pretty close together. On the front, there are only two connections: USB Type-A and USB Type-C, plus the power button and eject button for the disc.

One thing I noticed is that the black part of the PS5 shows fingerprints and smudges pretty easily. Use a microfiber cloth, and you can wipe it right off.

Before you start the PS5, connect your controller using the USB cable.

Now we are going to start this up for the first time. Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button.

Select your language. Continue with the screen reader turned on? No. Turn it off and continue.

From here, you can make adjustments for your video display.

At this point, we will install our first game onto the PS5. Here is the result of the poll we did on our channel. Press cross to select. Call of Duty: Cold War. You guys voted, so we are going to play this one first.

Just a heads up: when you insert the disc into the drive, make sure the top of the disc is facing up.

Also, when you turn on the PS5 for the very first time, you will need to update the software, so go ahead and do that.

The software update took about 30 minutes because the file I was uploading kept saying it was corrupted, but eventually it worked. One more thing: downloading Call of Duty from the disc to the PS5 took about an hour, so be patient.

Before we start playing, we need to make four adjustments in the settings.

First is the power saving setting. You want your controller to turn off after 30 minutes of no use. This will save battery life in your controller.

Next, go to the sound settings. Then go to microphone and set the microphone to mute when starting a chat or broadcast.

Next, go to screen and video settings and set deep color output to automatic. This will display finer grades of color, although it may not work on all TVs.

Last, go to save data and game app settings. Then go to game presets and make sure to set this to performance mode.

That is it. Let us get into Call of Duty.

You are watching our very first gameplay on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This game is stunning in every way. The level of detail is overwhelming, and the video is very smooth.

The PS5 controller is amazing. It is simply the best controller I have ever used. The haptic feedback is insane. After playing on DualShock controllers for decades, this controller is a total game changer. You could never go back to a DualShock controller. Sony knocked it out of the park.

As you can see, we are playing zombie mode, Ground Zero. The online experience is very good, and we had no issues. I am looking forward to playing the different modes, and I will definitely get some DLC, like additional maps for zombie mode.

If you are a Call of Duty fan, this game is a must. Even firing your weapon feels way different than Black Ops. It feels smoother. I do not know how to explain it. It just feels different, and that is probably because of the haptic feedback.

Now let us take a look at a couple of other games for the PS5. First, we will look at Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Once again, the level of detail is amazing. The haptic feedback is incredible, and the cinematic sound for this game is really impressive. This game is so realistic that you almost get dizzy playing it. If you are a Spider-Man fan, this game is a must.

The next game we are going to look at is Astro's Playroom. This game is designed for kids, but I love playing it. The sound effects and the way it plays are incredible. The game designers went all out. It is so creative, it is insane.

Each world gets crazier and crazier, and the best part about Astro's Playroom is that it comes with the PS5.

The last game we are going to look at is Mortal Kombat 11.

One thing I wanted to mention is the quick loading times from the SSD. It is very fast. I have not played this game in a while. I had the PC edition, and this looks incredible. I have to say, it rivals the PC edition.

Once again, the haptic feedback immerses you in the gameplay. I cannot imagine going back to a DualShock controller and playing. The audio is incredible, the video is incredible, and the gameplay is super smooth. If you love fighting games, Mortal Kombat 11 is a must.

We are all done here. As usual, I want you to visit our Patreon page, where $2 a month can help keep this channel growing.

Once again, thank you for watching. Remember, if you like this video, give it a thumbs up and share it. If you love it, hit subscribe to keep this channel alive.
