Step-by-Step Guide to Setting a Static IP on Your Laptop

If you're looking to assign a static IP address to your laptop, you've come to the right place. Whether it's for consistent device identification on your network or to avoid IP conflicts, setting a static IP is a useful skill for any user. This guide walks you through updating your router settings and configuring your laptop’s IP assignment manually in just a few simple steps.

How to Set a Static IP on Your Laptop (Quick Guide)

How to Configure a Static IP Address

  1. Log into your router interface and navigate to the DHCP Server settings under the Network section.
  2. Locate the IP Address Pool. For this setup, reduce the DHCP range so it ends at 192.168.0.7. This leaves 192.168.0.8 available for static assignment.
  3. On your laptop, open the Wi-Fi settings and select More Wi-Fi Settings.
  4. Click on Hardware Properties and locate IP Address Assignment.
  5. Click Edit, change the setting from Automatic to Manual, and enable IPv4.

Enter the following values:

Setting Value
IP Address 192.168.0.8
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS Server 1.1.1.3 (Cloudflare)

Once all fields are complete, click Save. Your laptop will now operate with a static IP address. This ensures it maintains the same identity on your local network even after reboots or reconnects.

I'm going to show you how to set up a static IP address for your laptop.

First, log into your router and look for the DHCP Server settings, typically under the "Network" section. Then, locate the IP address pool and adjust the last octet to nine. This changes the pool range to 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.8.

Next, go to your Wi-Fi icon and open "More Wi-Fi Settings." From there, select "Hardware Properties" and find "IP Address Assignment." You'll see it’s set to "Automatic." Click "Edit" and change the setting from Automatic to Manual. Enable IPv4.

Enter the following:

  • IP address: 192.168.0.8
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway: 192.168.0.1
  • DNS: Cloudflare 1.1.1.3

Once everything looks correct, hit "Save." Now your static IP address is set to 192.168.0.8.

Bam. You're good to go!
